This Grenache embodies the character of the region, which is renowned for its vibrancy, elegance and exuberance. In appearance, it exhibits a lovely translucent ruby hue, with hints of purple, reflecting its youthful nature and freshness. Incredibly aromatic, combined with beauty and exuberance, this wine presents beautiful floral notes as well as red fruits and little hints of spicy undertones.

2023 “TAKE UP SPACE” Carbonic

Winemaking
Our Gamay was transferred straight from the vineyard into a stainless steel tank. No destemming, crushing or anything. As soon as the fruit hit the bottom of the tank we sealed that sucker up. Unlike the many styles of wines we have made throughout our career, the technique behind this wine was to purely do nothing. But no winemaker ever wants to do nothing, right? So, we kept an eye on it every day, giving it CO2 when needed and applying small temperatures changes to help guide the wine down the right path.

After 22 days of the grapes being held in an anaerobic environment, we pressed it and sent it straight to barrel. This carbonic process of making Gamay gave the inspiration for the astronaut label art.

2023 “Point of Contact”

Winemaking
The Pinot Gris is generally picked a little riper than a typical white pinot gris. With the intention to achieve richness in the wine. In 2023 we picked it on September 16th.

This vintage, we sorted each cluster and destemmed. Then we put the tank directly into cold soak — where the magic of this Pinot Gris starts to take place. As the skins and juice interact, the phenolics slowly start to leech from the skins into the fermenter, causing the aromatics to intensify, the textures to richen, and the color to create a faint hue of pink/orange.

We tasted the fresh juice every 6-8 hours to determine the perfect amount of skin influence. In the case of the 2023 vintage, that magic number was 36 hours. (the 2023 wine was just a few hours shy of the skin contact time in 2022) A gentle punch down was performed on the fermenter right before sending it to the press.

Our block sits at about 1300ft elevation and has plenty of cool wind hitting it in the evenings and early mornings during growing season. 

Block 50 specifically is an intriguing and very unique block of Les Collines and all of Walla Walla. It is the only block that doesn’t practice hedging at all. So the canopy provides a signifiant amount of protection from the hotter/sunnier days in Walla Walla. 

We pick this with enough acidity and structure while still trying to achieve depth of fruit. We did 50% whole cluster and aged in Amphora for ten months.
